What's the deal with meme coins

@Cypress
SafeMoon and Shib aren’t going to help crypto to succeed.
Unhappy bag holders will avoid investing again. Don’t back shady coins.

I’m not promoting anything. I’m not advocating for anyone to buy Dogecoin, SafeMoon, or SHIB.

I’m merely observing a potential unintentional positive outcome from their creation.

Your assumptions and cynical attitude do a disservice to this forum just as much as the shady coins do.

@Cypress
Of course, I said something you don’t like so I’m the bad guy.
Stop promoting poorly made shady coins and mature.

@Cypress
I think meme coins offer a chance to learn about crypto in a low-risk, user-friendly way.

It’s like playing poker with friends or family using nickels; it’s got some value but can’t buy anything with it unless you have loads.

Dogecoin was used as a tipping coin on sites like this one during its peak. Pretty similar to… well… guess y’all can figure this out yourselves.

As for meme coins in general, most are scams that leave folks without cash after a rug pull. If that’s not utility, then I don’t know what is.

Absolutely! And I think that someday an eccentric billionaire will scoop up a bunch of moons and we’ll get to ride along.

I wouldn’t complain, considering all the moons I have were free.

@IceSpice
It can also be used like currency at over 40k retail locations (such as Nordstrom, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin, Famous Footwear, etc.) using Gemini or SPEDN apps on your phone along with 7 other cryptocurrencies.

Many think they’ll get hyped just because of the name, that’s pretty much it; clearly a smart strategy.

SAFEMOON?! SOUNDS AMAZING, HERE TAKE ALL MY MONEY!

I don’t understand why people say there’s no utility. There absolutely is; it just comes with more risk, which many users don’t mind.

For example, Dogecoin is one of the most widely traded coins on Discord and certain second-layer games due to being fast, economical, and popular with a large market cap.

Many teens and young adults I know got into crypto first through Doge or other meme coins because their communities are usually relaxed with the rules, making it a good entry point for those without bank accounts or lower incomes.

While speculation plays a huge role, many of these meme coins do have practical uses.

@Quinby
I agree. It’s a way for younger users to handle money on the move.

So it’s basically Cash App or Venmo on the blockchain.

@Quinby
It was also used for fundraising back in the early days of the coin.

Doge or other meme coins

So does Doge have utility or not?

Definitely. As mentioned above, in addition to other points users have shared in this discussion.

I don’t own Doge and I find it overhyped, but still, Doge possesses quite a bit of value.
