Not a pointless post, I’m really curious about how meme coins came to be. I jumped on the dogecoin hype at its peak because I was caught up in the excitement, and now I’m new to crypto, getting familiar with the culture, and confused by the existence of these meme coins. Are they all just bad coins or is there a bigger reason for meme coins? Are they like a statement against traditional money?
Meme coins get people interested in crypto. There were folks who had no interest in Bitcoin or Ethereum but suddenly became really curious about dogecoin, SafeMoon, and SHIB.
They act like the fun way into the crypto space.
For SafeMoon, it was basically a crash course in DeFi. Download trust wallet, get some BNB, swap it for BSC, use the app to visit pancakeswap, adjust the slippage, find the smart contract ID, and buy SafeMoon.
Sure, some of these newcomers left after a while, but many stuck around. They began exploring Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB. Many are still here today as part of this forum.
So, it’s not accurate to say these coins have no use.
@Cypress
I got into SafeMoon after a friend mentioned it to me during a night out. Just like you said.
He also guided me to use Coinbase and inspired me to start researching. So, I learned from a friend who had SafeMoon, Doge (via RobinHood), and Ethereum Classic, and now I’m holding and staking BTC, ETH, and a couple of good altcoins on a hardware wallet.

Exactly, that’s my point, welcome aboard, and I’m pleased you’re here. This is how more people start using crypto!
You hit the nail on the head. I was caught up in that excitement as well. My friend introduced me to it. I invest what I can afford to lose if things go south.
My main focus now is on ETH, and I’m considering staking either on KuCoin or Freeway.

Well, I was already into crypto but wanted fast returns so I tried SAFEMOON and SHIBA but they didn’t amount to much for me. It taught me the importance of researching projects; that’s when I found CREDMARK and MATIC, which showed me what a good project should have. CREDMARK just launched a risk modeling app to help crypto investors, and MATIC is performing well in the market.
Thanks. I feel irritated by how this community sometimes treats newcomers who bought these coins and seek insight and advice here.
They often receive unhelpful negativity and insults. Phrases like ‘It’s going to zero’, ‘You got scammed’, or ‘You bought a bad coin’ aren’t the way to welcome new members to any community.
I apologize on behalf of this forum to anyone who has faced this negativity and who continues to do so. It’s especially strange because many of us who invested in Bitcoin and Ethereum a decade ago faced similar reactions.
Empathy and support can make a huge difference. Some of these newcomers are teenagers trying to invest their first time; let’s help them!
@Cypress
You’re really kind. I appreciate your helpful responses. I may not have much, but I trust in the well-known coins here like ETH and LINK, which I believe are valuable. At the same time, I find it easy to fall for the get-rich-quick mindset. I regret spending money on a coin I didn’t even believe in, but I’m happy to see it brought new people into crypto!
Doge got me started in crypto; others have helped me learn more and about the future. So, meme coins do serve as an easy way for newcomers, but usually, the good ones keep you interested.
@Wright
I find the $5 to $10 mark hard to believe… and it’s not an investment I’d count on… but it’s all part of the trend, with some people borrowing heavily to buy in and all (that’s risky) but not Doge’s fault… it is simply what it is, a coin with a cute dog face, have fun with it if you want! And enjoy a few moons.

Can confirm. The first crypto I bought was Doge on Robinhood. I sold my Doge, deleted Robinhood, and now my focus is on dollar-cost averaging ETH on Coinbase and moons.

Just make sure your purchases are through Coinbase Pro and not the regular Coinbase. That will save you a lot in fees.
