Coinbase just launched Coin50 index like the S and P 500 for crypto

Oh now that’s tempting for the next 6 to 9 months

It’s a solid way to get exposure to altcoins. If one goes bust, it’ll just get replaced by one that is trending up.

The issue is that in the S and P, companies that drop out of the top 500 usually still have some value. Altcoins that tank usually go to zero, which isn’t good when they only change every quarter.

@Brandy
Not zero; if they drop, most bleed to 95 percent in a few months.

This would make that problem worse if it gets adopted. Many of those coins have very little trading volume, so a big fund selling them just as they drop could really hurt it.

Good :joy:

It would make it hard for the fund to work since it would always lose volume or get stuck with dead coins. There’s just not enough liquidity at that level.

Doesn’t really matter; we can’t trade it anyway.

@Alex
So you just buy it and look at it on your phone?

That’s what I do with all my crypto lol

Just a fancy version of a market cap tracker?

@Alex
The fund would still need to sell the coins at its own risk, whether it’s for good value or at a total loss.

It’s an index, not a fund.

This comment is empty, admin should fix.

@Brandy
How about if Coinbase were to launch something pegged to an S and P 500 index?

You vastly underestimate the number of bad coins in the top 50.

There are many coins in the top 50 that have dropped significantly. SOL was $8 in 2022. DOT was $55, and it’s still around $5.

You are an evil person. Now that theme song will be stuck in my head all night.

There are around 4 to 20 reasons to invest in this right now.
